Clutch advice please
I'm looking for a clutch release bearing, this may be a long story but please bear with me.
I may have boobed by buying the wrong clutch but hopefully someone will point me in the right direction. I have a standard S12 engine and gearbox fitted in my Reliant Scimitar SS1. It seems that the original clutch had a slightly thicker bearing than standard, at 22mm instead of 19mm. I have two S12 NSK bearings: both TK40-4A, the standard item has individual letter E while on the thicker one that fell out of my car its J. Presumably there is a reason for this so it would matter if I fitted the thinner one ??? The clutch kit I bought is from an S13, friction and pressure plates fit without problems but the release bearing is a different design and wont rotate on the S12 carrier. Presumably this is from the later S13 as I understand that the early S13 ones fit directly. Does anyone know if there is an alternative bearing I can use ? Or another way around it ? The new clutch is Aisin CNS41076 also labelled on the box as KN-076 and clutch kit CN402 DN059 BN006 The friction disc has 3 or4 big springs as opposed to 6 smaller ones on the original. If I've got the wrong kit please let me know, I'll offer it for sale. Thanks, Geoff. |

The S13 clutch normally fits fine. However the bearing was changed early on for another but S13 owners know that it should also fit. As the MKII gearbox is almost the same as the S13 it should fit. Are you sure you have fitted it to the collar coorectly ? Whats the difference between the original bearing and the new one ?
Have a look on ebay as bearings pop up for around £10

I'm wondering if I've been supplied the wrong bearing in the kit. It fits on te collar but wont rotate, will go out in the cold and have another look
I'm also wondering if I've been a bit thick and am trying to fit it the wrong way around ? The new bearing allegedly S13 looks like a ring within a cup, if I have this side towards the engine it should work. Is that right ? KOYO RCT40SA JAPAN Last edited by geoffp67; 28-11-2010 at 15:09. How did you press it onto the collar ? The inner part needs to face the flywheel as you engage the shaft. Can you post a pic of the bearing using photobucket img tags etc
should look like this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/S14-200SX-SR20...item230046c82a Quote:

Ah-ha ! thanks for your help, we may be making progress.
I hadnt thought to scour fleabuy looking at the pictures. I havn't pressed it on yet as I'm not confident that I have the correct part. I'll squeeze it on slowly with a big vice, cushioned with a bit of wood. The picture shows something very like my "standard" bearing, the side shown would face the gearbox as the other side is curved to rub the fingers. The one that came with the Aisin kit is different, it looks like this one: S14 & S14a 200SX SR20DET Clutch Release Bearing 95- 98 Does that suggest I have the wrong clutch ? Does it matter ? I'm loathe to experiment as its an engine-out job to change a clutch on this car, and its far too cold. Geoff |

Well, its a direct fit on the engine, I put it on a few days ago. Im a bit concerned that if it has a different bearing then the "wrong" bearing wont work it properly, different shapes etc. Will nerd the part numbers and get back to you.
