Default Brakes & RB26DETT's ?

Hi again guys.....2 things....

1. I took the brakes to bits the other day. And now I have a quietish knocking noise from that corner of the car. Its frequency increases with speed, and stops when I go for the brakes. The pads are very loose in the carrier, and other than that I can't see anything else that could be causing it.

2. I have started to look for an engine conversion to do in my S12, so I can collect bits before I need to take it to bits, and get it sorted.

On my travels I have found an R32 GTR with, 50k miles on it, that is almost standard for breaking. I have contacted matey, and gone to see the engine and have a chat to him. And it turns out it's someone I know from years ago. So he has offered me engine, manifolds, turbos, ancilliaries, mounts, loom, ecu and gearbox for £2.5k. Its the ideal thing for me, because a light tune will make it damn fast and hypothetically realiable.

Now I've seen quite a few RB26DETT's go for about £2k for bare engine (cam covers to sump) so I see it as a bit of a bargain.

But more importantly....I need to know if anyones done it before that could give me some inside info on anything I might need to be wary of.

I've done a few conversions before, so I've got some chance, including RB25DET into an S13, so it must be a similarish conversion to that?

And any more thoughts on the idea?

Heya mate, I can tell you from personal experience, that price is a pretty fair one.

As for an RB26 into an S12, yes it's been done before. First was one in Finland several years ago. I completed the second one just last year and late last year a third one was done in Greece. That's all that are known to have a 26 swap.

For information about RB swaps (20-26) into an S12: http://s12silvia.com/community/index...lly-addressed/

If you you want more pictures and have any questions I'll do what I can to help you out.

sonds like your missing the anti-rattle clips for the pads. I think S12s have them ayway, I've converted to S14 and haven't seen stock s12 for a while.

Yeah, the S12s have the metal shim that helps absorb some of the rattle and noise.

Cool. I'll have a proper look at that link later. When I've time to sit and read through it.

My S12 does have the metal shims that go into the rear carriers, but they don't appear to hold the pads very well?

Draconis when you did your 26 swap into the 12 what gearbox did you use?

I have the option of RB26, RB25 of SR20 open to me at the moment.

Also it looks like the transmission tunnel will need fetteling, although I know of two local R32's for breaking. One GTR, and one GTST, so is it worth having a floor pan out of one of the other?

The other thing I've been considering is has anyone ever attempted/achieved a subframe conversion on the back of the S12, say to S13, S14 or R32? Just an idea that swung into my head the other day.

Thanks for your advice as always guys.

Here is some info about swapping over an S13 rear subfrme. The S14 is similar to the same process. R32 is a little different I think but same concept. http://s12silvia.com/community/index...s-and-options/

As for transmission.

The RB20 trans fits with only massaging to make room for the starter. No big deal. The RB25 from my experience and Dan's (Canadian who has an RB25 S12), you have to do some work to get it in place. The RB26 is worse for it has that "tumor" on the side that has a smaller driveshaft to connect to the front diff. for the 4wd setup it comes with. For that it would be quite a bit of work. May be worth id but it would be on your driver's side, which would be a pain I reckon with seat placement.

rb box's do fit with the fj20 starter though, no messing at all.
